Plain concrete is one of the most widely used forms of concreting around homes and commercial buildings. This can include driveways, paths, structural building components and more.

This is a more affordable type of concreting above other styles that require more work in the installation process and higher quality finishes. It can still be attractive and give a home better street appeal with driveways and paths or around pools.

SEQ Concreting has more than 27 years of experience preparing sites and laying plain concrete across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Ballina and Toowoomba.

Process Of Making Plain Concrete

Plain concrete requires mixing of four (4) ingredients, course aggregate, fine aggregate, cement (PPC) and water.

This is mixed inside a truck with a spinning mixing container or portable device on the ground for large scale jobs. Small jobs can be hand mixed in a wheelbarrow or on the ground. The ingredients are mixed proportionally to the size of the job to ensure consistency and form for the work to be completed.

The concrete will begin hardening within several hours and be fully cured in 24 plus hours. It’s important to not walk or drive on the concrete until this step has been completed.

Benefits of Plain Concrete

Affordability

As mentioned, this type of concrete is more affordable than other types of concrete such as coloured, exposed aggregate and

Covercrete.

The mix of the concrete and the application of the pour does not involve as much work and product, therefore making it cheaper to install. The finish can still look very presentable and rejuvenate a property.

Durability

Plain concrete is very durable and can withstand almost any weather conditions and use including rain, storms, fire and vehicle use. Professionally laid plain concrete will withstand these elements and not deteriorate for many years to come..

Low Maintenance

This type of concrete is very easy to maintain. It can be swept or hosed down to clean off any mess and debris. Often a sealer is applied to further protect the surface and maintain the finish.

Energy Efficient

When used on buildings, this concrete will retain heat outside and keep the building inside cool, reducing energy costs.

Applications

As mentioned, plain concrete can be used for a variety of different applications around homes, commercial premises and public areas, including:

  • Driveways.
  • Paths.
  • Pool surrounds.
  • Entertainment areas.
  • Shed slabs.
  • Parking lots.
  • Foundations.
  • High rise building construction.
  • Sporting facilities, courts.

When planning to install a driveway or path, you may require council approval for the work. You can apply to do the job with the council prior to the start of the works. This will avoid any issues after the job has been done. Council permit information here:

Gold Coast City Council

Brisbane City Council

Ballina Shire Council

Toowoomba Region Council

We can also assist in gaining an application to avoid delays and additional costs.
